About Me

I am an architect with over 20 years experience designing just about everything.  I believe success is achieved by recognising opportunity and having the determination to pursue it.  I enjoy helping people overcome the challenges of realising their dreams and creating delight in the places we live.

Before I had my children I worked on social and private housing, schools, football stadiums, community hospitals, health centres, and masterplans.  My last project working for London based Penoyre and Prasad architects, The QE2 Hospital, won 11 major national and international awards including a RIBA national design award and a RIBA sustainability award.  Since having my children I’ve worked for myself getting difficult projects through planning.  I have never yet failed to achieve permission for London (butterfly) roof extensions, new build houses, extensions and alterations to listed buildings, and delightful but contentious glass boxes with balconies and views over London.  I studied at The Royal College of Art in London, exploring the art of the modern, the imaginative, the innovative, and the challenging. My personal love of traditional, sustainable and ethical building techniques never stops growing.

Small Projects

  • 42 Haselrigge Road:

Four flats, a ground floor wrap-around extension & a London roof extension in Brixton Hill

I have just submitted this application to extend the roof and ground floor of this Brixton home. The concept of extending the London Roof (otherwise known as a Butterfly Roof) received a positive “Pre-Application” report and some clever planning and a creative side extension found us the extra square meters needed to meeting Lambeth council’s requirements for new flat conversions.

  • Our lockdown playhouse

We spent a fun few weekends designing building and building this Playhouse for the children over a long lockdown spring in 2020. The house is built from untreated larch posts, a lovely steel slide from Ebay, and natural cedar shingles. We added a pulley and bucket to send treats from the house, and reused an old climbing net and an old step ladder that was being given away in our street. Later additions include opening porthole windows, recycled cladding (from a skip in the street), old cast iron brackets to support bench seats, and cast iron window boxes from Ebay. New photos coming soon!

  • Glass box butterfly roof extension

Nick and Justine’s application for a roof extension to the London (Butterfly) roof on their lovely Victorian terrace had been previously rejected at planning and again at appeal. I worked with them to put together this lovely minimalist scheme which blended a simple glass box with the sky. A close relationship with the planner and many hours of hard work resulted in a much celebrated success. They have since built the roof extension and are loving their forever home.

  • Two flats, two extensions and a rooftop balcony for a fledgling developer

When she was researching her first adventure into property development Zarah noticed my success in getting a London (butterfly) roof extension approved for Justine and Nick on Maxted Road, and when she bought a terraced house on that street she got in touch to see if I could help her get approval on a similar roof extension and a ground floor extension to create two large flats at the

  • Fairlawn Primary school secret garden masterplan

We undertook a detailed consultation with the staff and students at Fairlawn School and put together a Masterplan to develop the neglected tree filled green space at the rear of the school. The children were wonderful and plans included a treehouse, raised beds, firepit and log circle, outdoor stage, workshop and pizza oven. Much of it has now been built and work is ongoing

  • A projecting glass roof box, pop up bed space and balconies with sweeping views of the London Skyline

My ambitious plan for my own house and the neighbouring semi-detached house involved a glazed box roof extension which overhung the front elevation, capturing sweeping views of Canary Wharf, the Gherkin the Shard, and the Eye. Above that a cheeky pop-up mezzanine with just enough space for a bed takes in another fantastic view of the city, and to the rear a balcony looks out towards St Pauls and the west. We first obtained planning permission to develop both houses together, but later won the appeal to build ours independently.

  • A clay pizza oven for Fairlawn School. Built from the ground with grassroots labour

I designed and built this clay pizza oven as part of our Masterplan for Fairlawn Primary School’s neglected green space. The clay was dug out of a neighbours garden as part of some landscaping work. The whole school collected glass bottles to insulate the base and we even had a team of volunteers from Google spend a day shifting sand and mixing mud to help out the hardworking parents who laboured over months to make this happen.

  • Reapplication for a modern side extension in Bermondsey

Kelly and Amit’s side extension had been previously refused planning permission and refused at appeal. I worked with them, introducing a planted green wall and replanning the space to enable us to reduce the impact of the elevation on the neighbours. I succeeded in obtaining planning permission for the design.

  • Emma and Kai’s new build house in Bermondsey

Emma and Kai’s modest two-up two-down in Bermondsey was on a generous plot. They wanted to create a lifetime home for their young family, demolishing the existing property and replacing it with a generous 4 bedroom house with a welcoming open plan kitchen. We met with unexpected resistance from the planning department but we hung on in there and our persistence paid off. They are working on the build now.
